This is a low-lying, cushion-like cactus, covered with cone-shaped tubercles each bearing a cluster of three to eight reddish brown spines. Flowers are purple to dark red with a yellow centre. Fruit is a pale green fleshy berry that is very sweet and edible. This species is very common on hillsides.
