Locoweed

Oxytropis spp

GIF-Locoweed

The early yellow and showy species of locoweed are common in dry and moist prairie respectively. Forbs grow from a taproot with no apparent stem. Once dried, these create a characteristic rattling sound when shaken or blown by the wind. Although rarely a problem, locoweed is listed as poisonous. Still, extensive consumption can cause death to animals.
