Alkali cord grass

Spartina gracilis

GIF-Alkali cord grass

Alkali cord grass has a range that extends from the prairies to the Pacific Coast. It is found in sandy, saline flats, around the borders of alkali sloughs, and along shallow streams. It has strong, scaly, creeping roots and a deep-feeding root system. Its leaves are long and tough, with tiny, saw-like teeth along the edges. The flower head consists of four to eight spikes.
