Wetlands of the United States

Their Extent and Their Value To Waterfowl and Other Wildlife

Plate 9

Fomer saline flats
Former saline flat on Bear River National Wildlife Refuge in Utah. Thirty-nine miles of dikes now surround 65,000 acres of flats where duck use has increased as a result of controlled water levels. Under natural conditions, most flats have too little water to be of much value to waterfowl except on rare occasions when they are flooded.
