Very similar to R. occidentalis, differing as follows: Basal leaf
blades oblong-lanceolate, flat, acute to rounded at the base. Pedicels
obscurely jointed below the middle, the joint not swollen; valves orbicular
to rotund-ovate, truncate at the base, 5-8 mm long and about as wide, entire
to denticulate; tubercles 3, ca. 1/2 the length of the valve, the base
of the tubercle distinctly above the base of the valve. Springs, fens and fresh
marshes; uncommon and scattered; (Newf. and Que. to ND, s to NJ, OH, IL, IA
and NE).
