This comprehensive review addresses North American wetland distribution, abundance, classification, preservation, value, and management. Water control, vegetation control, and animal control are discussed in detail; burning is listed as a major habitat improvement tool. Types of burns are summarized. The burning of over 404,700 ha per year in management of fresh, brackish, and salt marshes of the south Atlantic and Gulf coastsis emphasized. [K-L-S]
