All aspects of the ecology of the New Jersey Pine Barrens are explored in 33 chapters that address people and their historical and recent effects; geology and soils; climate, water, and aquatic systems; vegetation patterns; flora and fauna; and ecological research opportunities and the uniqueness and complexity of the ecosystem. Almost all chapters address the effects of recurrent fire upon the Barrens and stress the importance of natural fire patterns to the maintenance of the Barrens vegetation.
