Aquatic Invertebrate Ecology During a Simulated
Botulism Epizootic in a Sacramento Valley Wetland

Management Implications

Reducing the risk of avian diseases continues to be a concern on many waterfowl refuges (Bellrose 1976). While only one dead bird, a lesser yellowlegs (Tringa melanoleuca [Gmelin]), was detected on the study wetland during the experiment, this does not imply that waterfowl carcasses present no risk to healthy avian populations. We suggest that the current practice of many waterfowl refuges to aggressively collect and incinerate avian and mammal carcasses as a prophylactic measure for disease control should continue.
