Checklist and "Pollard Walk" Butterfly Survey Methods on Public Lands

Many individuals provided valuable assistance during our study. The authors particularly want to thank personnel at the seven study sites: Karen A. Smith and Robert K. Murphy, Lostwood National Wildlife Refuge; Robert L. Howard, J. Clark Salyer National Wildlife Refuge; Pam Orr, Sullys Hill National Game Preserve; Thomas A. Pabian, Chase Lake National Wildlife Refuge; Clint McCarthy, Custer National Forest District; Spike Thompson and Gary Foli, Little Missouri National Grassland; and Bernadette Braun, Sheyenne National Grassland. Richard A. Lent, Harvard University, shared his ideas on transect design and butterfly counting protocols. Douglas H. Johnson, Diane Larson, and Paul A. Opler provided valuable comments on earlier drafts of this paper. The study was funded through the Grasslands Ecosystem Initiative of the National Biological Service (now Biological Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey).
