The Swallowtails
Black Swallowtail Papilio polyxenes (Fabricius), 1775 Habitat: Gardens, prairie hilltops, always near Umbelliferae Larval food: Wild Umbelliferae, incl. Daucus, Zizea Adult flight: Two broods, May and July References: Royer 35, Opler & Krizek 44, Scott 171 Confirmed occurrences: Not recorded in 1995, but three examples counted on transect CS002, 11 Jun 1996. Canadian Tiger Swallowtail Pterourus canadensis (Rothschild & Jordan), 1906 Habitat: Ash breaks, woodlands; often found on Apocynum blooms Larval food: Populus, Salix, possibly also Prunus Adult flight: One brood, early June References: Royer 37, Opler & Krizek 49, Scott 179 Confirmed occurrences: Common throughout aspen woodlands from 30 May through 23 Jun 1995; especially abundant on 9 Jun 1995 in SW 1/4 S31 T159N R76W and SE 1/4 S36 T159N R77W, taking nectar in the morning at white Asclepias and in late afternoon at Eleagnus blooms; common 11 & 20 Jun 1996 in woodland portions of transect CS001.
