A Comprehensive Annotated List of the Butterflies
Little Missouri National Grassland Butterfly Survey
Format of Listings
In the list which follows, each species is first identified on the left by common name, after which is given the Latin name (at the binomial level unless the trinomial is pertinent), including its original author (if parenthesized, under a different genus name) and the date of description. Next is a brief description of typical habitat, in some cases of adult food sources, etc. This information is followed by an indication of the principal larval host(s), where known, and that by information on adult phenology. All this material is followed by three abbreviated citations for works in which more detailed information may be located. The abbreviation consists in the last names of authors followed by the page numbers on which the main textual entries will be found. These reference works are as follows:
- Royer, Ronald Alan. 1988. Butterflies of North Dakota: An Atlas and Guide. Minot State University Science Monograph Number One.
Finally, designation of all of these resources is followed by a listing of specific encounters made during the present survey and/or any known historic records pertinent to Little Missouri National Grassland. All records designated as "on BCV transect" or "on Summit transect S001" refer to the respective 1995 Pollard transects. "Summit transect S002" refers to the additional transect surveyed at Summit Campground in 1996. Other records are identified by legal description.
Editor's Note: Hyperlinks to appropriate pages of Atlas of North Dakota Butterflies have been added to facillitate cross-referencing. Photos of most species are available on that site.
