Snout Butterfly (Libytheana carinenta bachmanii)

  • BND: Snout Butterfly; Libytheana carinenta bachmanii (Kirtland, 1851)
  • BNA: American Snout; Libytheana carinenta
  • Habitat: A summer stray that is usually found in river bottom areas or on mud flats near Celtis; drinks avidly at mud puddles; is also occasionally encountered at flowers in late summer
  • Larval food: Celtis occidentalis in most of the normal breeding range
  • Adult flight: Migratory; brood history is erratic and poorly defined
