Wide ranging early discussion of the pros and cons of fire as a management tool. Reviews literature on fire in forests, grasslands, peat bogs, and agriculture relative to: 1) destruction of cover and plant and animal life; 2) modification of atmospheric factors; 3) direct and indirect effects on soil, and 4) plant succession.
