Reviews history of prescribed burning in Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois and Ohio and reports results of a 5-year survey study of prescribed burning in the area. Survey topics are numbers and acreages of burns per year; timing and objectives of burn; fuel type; weather (temperature, wind, humidity, days since last rain, and use of fire weather forecasts); time of day; burn duration; ignition tool and firing techniques; cost per acre; and success or failure in meeting objectives.
