Distribution of Fishes in the Red River of the North Basin on Multivariate Environmental Gradients

Ictaluridae

Yellow Bullhead

Ameiurus natalis (Lesueur), the yellow bullhead, was first reported in 1964 from the Buffalo River (BMNH 1994) (Figure A47). It has since been taken from the Red, Bois de Sioux, Otter Tail, Pelican, Buffalo, and Roseau Rivers. Of the three species of Ameiurus present in the basin, the yellow bullhead is the least common. It has been collected at only 7% of stream sites sampled since 1962 (Table 4). It has never been found in western basin tributaries, but prefers reaches in the NCH ecoregion of the eastern basin, where it has been present at 31% of sites. The species can be numerous at times, with site collections of 20 individuals not uncommon.
