Distribution of Fishes in the Red River of the North Basin on Multivariate Environmental Gradients

Catostomidae

White Sucker

Catostomus commersoni (Lacepède), the white sucker, was listed as C. teres by Woolman (1896), who collected it from the Red, Pembina, Park, Goose, Maple, Sheyenne, and Buffalo Rivers and the English Coulee, near Grand Forks. Hankinson (1928) found it to be abundant in the Red River in North Dakota and Olson (1932) collected it in several tributaries in Minnesota. Eddy and Underhill (1972) described the white sucker as the most common and widely distributed sucker in Minnesota, occurring in almost every permanent freshwater lake and stream. The white sucker has been collected in every major stream in the Red River basin (Figure A10), with site collections often including between 50-60 individuals.
