Distribution of Fishes in the Red River of the North Basin on Multivariate Environmental Gradients

Catostomidae

Weed Shiner

Notropis texanus (Girard), the weed shiner, was reported as N. roseus by BMNH (1994) from seven sites on the Otter Tail River in 1955 (Figure A36). The weed shiner has been found almost exclusively in the Otter Tail River, with two collections made on the Pelican River and a single collection on the Red Lake River near Thief River Falls. The species has been found at only 6% of the stream sites sampled in the basin since 1962, but it has been common in the Otter Tail River drainage above Fergus Falls, having been collected at 24% and 20% of the stream sites sampled in the NCH and the NLF ecoregions, respectively (Table 4). It has often been abundant in samples, with site collections of 50 individuals not uncommon, and as many as 694 specimens were collected at a site northeast of Fergus Falls and 572 above Pine Lake in 1976. However, fewer have been taken in these reaches in recent years.
