Distribution of Fishes in the Red River of the North Basin on Multivariate Environmental Gradients
Percidae
Walleye
Stizostedion vitreum (Mitchill), the walleye, was collected by Woolman (1896) from the Red, Sheyenne, Otter Tail, and Red Lake Rivers (Figure A76). Hankinson (1928) reported it from the Pembina River, and Olson (1932) collected two specimens from the Red Lake River above Crookston. The walleye has been collected primarily from the Red, Sheyenne, Otter Tail, Red Lake, and Roseau Rivers. It has been found at 18% of stream sites sampled in the Red River basin since 1962 and has been most common in the RRV and NMW ecoregions, where it has been taken at 26% and 38% of stream sites, respectively (Table 4). Typical site collections have contained 1-5 individuals; but the species has been highly abundant in the Roseau River, where 75 or more individuals were taken at three sites in 1976.
