Distribution of Fishes in the Red River of the North Basin on Multivariate Environmental Gradients

Ictaluridae

Stonecat

Noturus flavus Rafinesque, the stonecat, was originally thought not to occur in the Red River drainage (Underhill 1958, Bailey and Allum 1962). The first record of this species in the drainage system was by Stewart and Lindsey (1970), who collected nine specimens from the Red River south of Winnipeg. Since then, the stonecat has been found at several sites on Red River and several of its tributaries (Figure A50). The species has typically been rare in site collections, as most have consisted of a single or a few specimens. The highest occurrence of the stonecat has been at Lake Agassiz beach ridge transition reaches, where it has been taken at 9% of the sites (Table 4).
