Distribution of Fishes in the Red River of the North Basin on Multivariate Environmental Gradients
Cyprinidae
Spottail Shiner
Notropis hudsonius (Clinton), the spottail shiner, was collected by Woolman (1896) from the Red, Park, Forest, Sheyenne, Otter Tail, and Red Lake Rivers where it was rare to common in the samples (Figure A33). Pope reported it from the Sheyenne River south of Fort Totten in 1907 (SI 1994), Hankinson (1928) found it in the Red River and the Sheyenne River at Pekin, and Hubbs and Schultz collected it from the Sheyenne River at Valley City in 1926 (UMMZ 1994). Olson (1932) listed Hybopsis hudsonius from several tributaries in the eastern reaches of the basin, and Deason and Nelson collected it from the Tamarack River (Red Lake River) in 1938 (UMMZ 1994). The spottail shiner has been taken primarily from the Sheyenne, Otter Tail, and Buffalo Rivers, where more than 150 individuals have been taken at times. The spottail shiner has not been found in the Park and Forest Rivers since Woolman (1896) made his early collections, and the species appears to be absent from all western basin tributaries except the Sheyenne River.
