Distribution of Fishes in the Red River of the North Basin on Multivariate Environmental Gradients
Scianidae
Freshwater Drum
Aplodinotus grunniens Rafinesque, the freshwater drum, was collected by Woolman (1896) from the Red Lake River at Crookston, where it was reported as uncommon (Figure A77); however, Surber (1920) provided records of the State Fisheries at Red Lake, where 69,119 pounds of freshwater drum had been taken before 1919. The freshwater drum has been collected primarily from the Red and Red Lake Rivers. The species has been collected at 13% of the stream sites sampled in the Red River basin since 1962 and has occurred at 24% of the sites sampled in the RRV ecoregion (Table 4). Typical site collections have contained 1-5 individuals; but the species has been highly abundant in the Red Lake River, where as many as 54 individuals were taken at a site near High Landing.
