Distribution of Fishes in the Red River of the North Basin on Multivariate Environmental Gradients

Percidae

Sauger

Stizostedion canadense (Smith), the sauger, was not collected by early investigators in the Red River basin. Although Eddy et al. (1972) indicated that no authentic records of the sauger existed for the Red River drainage in Minnesota, the species was collected by Copes and Tubb (1966) and Tubb et al. (1965) from several sites in North Dakota in 1964, including the Pembina River and lower reaches of the Park, Forest, Turtle, Goose, Rush, and Sheyenne Rivers (Figure A75). The sauger has since been reported primarily from the Red River and was common in the Roseau River during a survey in 1976. The species has been uncommon in the Red River basin, having been collected at only 7% of stream sites sampled since 1962 (Table 4).
