Distribution of Fishes in the Red River of the North Basin on Multivariate Environmental Gradients

Cyprinidae

River Shiner

Notropis blennius (Girard), the river shiner, was listed as N. jejunus by Woolman (1896), who collected specimens from the Red, Pembina, Forest, and Red Lake Rivers where it was common in the samples (Figure A29). Hankinson (1928) described the species as abundant in the Red and Pembina Rivers; and Olson (1932) collected three specimens from the Sandhill River, listing them as Hybopsis blennius. The river shiner has been taken primarily from the Red and Sheyenne Rivers and has not been reported from any eastern basin tributary. It has been uncommon, having been found at only 3% of stream sites sampled in the Red River basin since 1962 (Table 4). Site collections have typically contained between 1-10 individuals.
