Distribution of Fishes in the Red River of the North Basin on Multivariate Environmental Gradients

Salmonidae

Rainbow Trout

Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), the rainbow trout, was one of the first species to be introduced and stocked in Minnesota, sometime in the late 1800s (Eddy and Underhill 1974). In the Red River basin, Eddy et al. (1972) described it as an important sport fish in the cool headwaters of the Clearwater River and streams tributary to Red Lake. Site records are from headwater reaches of the Tongue, Turtle, Sheyenne, Red Lake, and Clearwater Rivers (Figure A6). Historically, the species has also been stocked in reaches of the Pelican and Buffalo Rivers.
