Distribution of Fishes in the Red River of the North Basin on Multivariate Environmental Gradients
Catostomidae
Quillback
Carpiodes cyprinus (Lesueur), the quillback, was not
collected by early investigators from streams in the Red River basin. However,
Surber (1920) listed C. thompsoni as an important species in the Red Lake
commercial fishery, and Eigenmann (1895) listed C. velifer from the Red River at
Winnipeg. The quillback has been reported primarily from the Red and Red Lake
Rivers and the lower reaches of the Otter Tail River (Figure A9). The quillback
has been reported from 10% of stream sites sampled in the Red River basin since
1962, but has preferred reaches in the RRV ecoregion, where it has been taken at
20% of the sites (Table 4).
