Distribution of Fishes in the Red River of the North Basin on Multivariate Environmental Gradients

Centrarchidae

Pumpkinseed

Lepomis gibbosus (Linnaeus), the pumpkinseed, was first reported by Wilson (1950) from the Sheyenne River north of Valley City (Figure A60). The species was later found at two sites on the Otter Tail River in 1955 (BMNH 1994). The pumpkinseed has been taken primarily from the Sheyenne, Otter Tail, and Pelican Rivers. It has been found at 9% of stream sites sampled in the Red River basin since 1962, but has been most common at reaches in the NLF ecoregion, where it has occurred at 30% of the sites (Table 4). Most site collections have consisted of 1-3 individuals, but as many as 28 have been found at sites on the Otter Tail and Pelican Rivers.
