Distribution of Fishes in the Red River of the North Basin on Multivariate Environmental Gradients

Cyprinidae

Pugnose Shiner

Notropis anogenus Forbes, the pugnose shiner, was unknowingly collected by Woolman (1896). Carl Hubbs (UMMZ) identified a single specimen in a collection of blacknose shiners made by Woolman in the Sheyenne River at Lisbon (Hankinson 1928) (Figure A27). The only other records of the pugnose shiner from the Red River basin are from the BMNH. Four specimens were collected in 1975 from the Pelican River east of Detroit Lakes. In 1976, another four specimens were collected from the Otter Tail River west of Otter Tail Lake, and 18 specimens were collected from the same stream northeast of Fergus Falls. Eddy et al. (1972) reported its presence in the Otter Tail River at Frazee, but this account was not verified elsewhere.
