Distribution of Fishes in the Red River of the North Basin on Multivariate Environmental Gradients

Centrarchidae

Orangespotted Sunfish

Lepomis humilis (Girard), the orangespotted sunfish, was first reported by Bailey and Allum (1962), who described it from Lake Traverse in 1949. The orangespotted sunfish has been taken almost exclusively from the Sheyenne River, but it has also been found near the mouth of the Otter Tail River, where one specimen was taken in 1991, and at the southern end of Lake Traverse, where three specimens were taken in 1985 (MDNR ECO 1994) (Figure A61). The orangespotted sunfish has been common in the Sheyenne River and has occurred at 13% of the stream sites sampled in the NGP ecoregion since 1962 (Table 4).
