Distribution of Fishes in the Red River of the North Basin on Multivariate Environmental Gradients

Percidae

Least Darter

Etheostoma microperca Jordan & Gilbert, the least darter, was not reported by early investigators in the Red River basin. The first verified occurrence was from the Otter Tail River, where it was collected at two sites in 1955 (BMNH 1994) (Figure A69). Underhill (1958) later provided records of this species from the Otter Tail River. The least darter has been reported only from the Otter Tail and Pelican rivers. The species has been extremely rare in the basin, having been taken at only 1% of the stream sites sampled since 1962 (Table 4). It has occurred at 7% of the sites in the NCH ecoregion. The number of specimens collected at each site has typically ranged from 1-27, but as many as 179 individuals were taken from a site on the Otter Tail River near Phelps in 1976.
