Distribution of Fishes in the Red River of the North Basin on Multivariate Environmental Gradients
Cyprinidae
Hornyhead Chub
Nocomis biguttatus (Kirtland), the hornyhead chub, was listed as Hybopsis
kentuckiensis by Woolman (1896), who collected specimens from the Forest,
Maple, Sheyenne, Otter Tail, Buffalo, and Red Lake Rivers (Figure A25). The
species was also reported by Olson (1932), who collected 16 specimens from the
Red Lake River near Crookston and 1 specimen each from the Lost (Clearwater
River) and Wild Rice Rivers in Minnesota. The hornyhead chub has been taken
primarily from eastern basin tributaries, except for collections made in the Forest
River, where as many as 478 individuals were collected at a single site in 1994.
The hornyhead chub has evidently been extirpated from the Sheyenne River. The
species has been found at 47% of stream sites in the NCH and 35% of the sites in
the NLF ecoregions since 1962 (Table 4). It has not been found in the reaches of the northern RRV or NMW ecoregions.
