Distribution of Fishes in the Red River of the North Basin on Multivariate Environmental Gradients

Catostomidae

Northern Hog Sucker

Hypentelium nigricans (Lesueur), the northern hog sucker, was first reported from the Red River basin in 1974, when 14 specimens were collected from the Otter Tail River northeast of Fergus Falls by BMNH (1994) (Figure A11). This species has since been found to be common only in this reach, and it has occurred at 17% of the sites in the NCH ecoregion (Table 4). The species has been abundant at times, with site collections containing as many as 22 individuals.
