Distribution of Fishes in the Red River of the North Basin on Multivariate Environmental Gradients
Catostomidae
Greater Redhorse
Moxostoma valenciennesi Jordan, the greater redhorse, was collected by Woolman (1896) (a single specimen) from the Maple River, but was not reported by other early investigators in the basin. Recent collections in the Red River basin are primarily from the Otter Tail and Sheyenne Rivers, with one record from the Maple River and two records from the Red River (Figure A16). The greater redhorse can be locally abundant, even though its distribution is highly restricted. Hanson et al. (1984) collected as many as 46 individuals at sites below the Orwell Reservoir on the Otter Tail River southwest of Fergus Falls. Typical collections have ranged from 4-19 individuals.
