Distribution of Fishes in the Red River of the North Basin on Multivariate Environmental Gradients

Gadidae

Burbot

Lota lota (Linnaeus), the burbot, was collected by Woolman (1896) from the Red River at Moorhead and the Red Lake River at Crookston, where it was rare in the samples (Figure A55). Hankinson (1928) listed L. maculosa from the Red River at Grand Forks. The burbot has been collected from the Red, Otter Tail, Buffalo, Sandhill, Red Lake, and Roseau Rivers and the Wild Rice River in Minnesota. The species has not been common in the Red River basin overall, having been collected at only 5% of stream sites sampled since 1962 (Table 4). However, it has occurred at 36% of the sites in the NMW ecoregion. The burbot has typically not been abundant in samples, but as many as 30 specimens were taken at a single site in the Roseau River in 1976.
