Distribution of Fishes in the Red River of the North Basin on Multivariate Environmental Gradients
Cyprinidae
Flathead Chub
Platygobio gracilis (Richardson), the flathead chub, has been reported only
once from the Red River basin (Figure A42). Renard et al. (1985) collected a
single specimen from the Red River south of Grand Forks in 1984, during what
has turned out to be the most intensive survey of fishes ever completed in that
stream. It is unknown how this specimen entered the Red River basin. Bait
bucket transfer is one possibility, however, since the flathead chub occurs in the
Nelson River drainage in Canada. Scott and Crossman (1973) describe its
abundance in Lake Winnipeg and the Assiniboine River in Manitoba. It is possible
that the flathead chub entered the Red River in Manitoba and gained access to
the system in the United States.
