Distribution of Fishes in the Red River of the North Basin on Multivariate Environmental Gradients

Cyprinidae

Emerald Shiner

Notropis atherinoides Rafinesque, the emerald shiner, was collected by Woolman (1896) from the Pembina River, where only one specimen was taken, and the Red Lake River, where 25 specimens were taken (Figure A28). Other early records include that by Hankinson (1928), who collected it from the Red River near the Canadian border, and Olson (1932), who collected two specimens from the Red Lake River below Crookston. The emerald shiner has been reported primarily from the Red River, where site collections have consisted of up to 513 individuals. The species has also been found in the lower reaches of several other tributaries, but although it has been locally abundant, the emerald shiner has occurred at only 4% of stream sites sampled in the Red River basin since 1962 (Table 4).
