Distribution of Fishes in the Red River of the North Basin on Multivariate Environmental Gradients
Petromyzontidae
Chestnut Lamprey
Ichthyomyzon castaneus Girard, the chestnut lamprey, was listed as
Ammocoetes branchialis by Woolman (1896), who
collected it from the Sheyenne River at Lisbon and the Red Lake River at Grand
Forks and Crookston (Figure A1). Records of UMMZ (1994) included the
collection by Woolman (1896) at Grand Forks. Oftedal collected it from the Red
River in 1908 (SI 1994) and Young collected it in 1912 (Hankinson 1928). The
chestnut lamprey has been collected from the Red, Otter Tail, Red Lake,
Clearwater, and Roseau Rivers and the Wild Rice River in Minnesota and has
occurred at 24% of the sites in the NMW ecoregion (Table 4). A single specimen
was collected in the Goose River in 1994 by MDNR ECO (1994), which
represents the only verified collection of a chestnut lamprey from any western
basin tributary since the report from Lisbon by Woolman (1896).
