Distribution of Fishes in the Red River of the North Basin on Multivariate Environmental Gradients
Cyprinidae
Central Stoneroller
Campostoma anomalum (Rafinesque), the central
stoneroller, was first reported from the Red River basin by O. Kalin, University of
North Dakota (UND), from the Forest River on August 6, 1960 (Nordlie et al.
1961) (Figure A17). Feldman (1963) also reported this species from the Forest
River, where it occurred at the UND Biology Area. The only other occurrence of
this species from this stream was by Copes and Tubb (1966), who reported 14
specimens. Site records for the central stoneroller elsewhere in the basin are
from the Otter Tail River, where it was first reported in 1974 and is often taken in
high abundance. Eddy et al. (1972) listed seven specimens taken from the
Pelican River by D. Reedstrom (formerly MDNR FISH), but this occurrence was
not found in BMNH records. Early site records from the Forest River should be
regarded with caution, since the largescale stoneroller C. oligolepis is also found
in the Forest River. It is possible that early reports of the common stonerollerfrom this stream were actually misidentified largescale stonerollers, until recently
treated as a subspecies of C. anomalum (Phillips et al. 1982).
