Distribution of Fishes in the Red River of the North Basin on Multivariate Environmental Gradients

Ictaluridae

Channel Catfish

Ictalurus punctatus (Rafinesque), the channel catfish, was collected by Woolman (1896) from the Red, Otter Tail, and Red Lake Rivers, where it was rare to common in the samples (Figure A49). Hankinson (1928) reported it from the Red River, and Eigenmann (1895) described the species as exceedingly abundant in the Red River at Winnipeg. The channel catfish has been taken in abundance in the Red River and lower reaches of the Sheyenne, Otter Tail, and Red Lake Rivers. The species has occurred at 22% of sites sampled in the RRV ecoregion since 1962 (Table 4).
