Distribution of Fishes in the Red River of the North Basin on Multivariate Environmental Gradients
Cyprinidae
Common Carp
Cyprinus carpio Linneaus, the common carp, is native to Asia and was
introduced to Minnesota waters in 1893 (Surber 1920). The species was not
collected by early investigators in the Red River basin, but was first reported from
the drainage by Bailey and Allum (1962), who found common carp in Lake
Traverse in 1949 (Figure A20). Feldman (1963) reported common carp from the
Forest River. The species has a widespread distribution in the Red River basin,
having been reported at 25% of the stream sites sampled since 1962 (Table 4).
Most reports are from the Red River, but it has also occurred in most tributaries.
Common carp have not been found in the Sheyenne River above Baldhill Dam or
the upper reaches of eastern tributaries in the NLF ecoregion.
