Distribution of Fishes in the Red River of the North Basin on Multivariate Environmental Gradients

Salmonidae

Brown Trout

Salmo trutta Linnaeus, the brown trout, was first stocked in North America in 1883 (Lee et al. 1980). It is unknown exactly when this species was introduced to waters of the Red River, but its date of stocking in Minnesota waters was probably around 1920 (Phillips et al. 1982). In the Red River basin, Eddy et al. (1972) described it from the colder headwaters of the Clearwater River near Bagley and the streams tributary to Red Lake. Site records are from the Tongue, Red Lake, and Clearwater Rivers (Figure A7). Historically, the species has also been stocked in reaches of the Otter Tail and Pelican Rivers.
