Distribution of Fishes in the Red River of the North Basin on Multivariate Environmental Gradients
Salmonidae
Brook Trout
Salvelinus fontinalis (Mitchill), the brook trout, is native to some cold water
streams of eastern Minnesota and has been introduced in suitable streams
elsewhere in the state (Eddy and Underhill 1974). Phillips et al. (1982) described
the many undocumented introductions of brook trout into spring fed streams and
spring holes by loggers and railroad workers. Many of these areas still support
trout populations. It is probably not native to the Red River basin (J.C. Underhill,
BMNH, pers. comm. 1995), but has been introduced to several tributaries, with
site records from the Buffalo, Clearwater, and Roseau Rivers and the Wild Rice
River in Minnesota (Figure A8). The species has also been stocked in reaches of
the Otter Tail and Pelican Rivers.
