Distribution of Fishes in the Red River of the North Basin on Multivariate Environmental Gradients

Cyprinidae

Brassy Minnow

Hybognathus hankinsoni Hubbs, the brassy minnow, were first reported in the Red River basin from Lake Traverse in 1949 (Bailey and Allum 1962), and the first stream records were from Shotley Brook, a tributary to Upper Red Lake, and the Wild Rice River, Minnesota, near Ada where collections were made by BMNH (1994) in 1955 (Figure A21). The brassy minnow has been reported from several streams in the basin. Underhill (1958) described this species as being one of the most dominant minnows in Minnesota; however, this is not the case in the Red River basin, as brassy minnows have been collected at only 3% of stream sites since 1962 (Table 4). Its distribution is rather broad, but the species should be considered uncommon, as most site collections have consisted of a single specimen.
