Distribution of Fishes in the Red River of the North Basin on Multivariate Environmental Gradients

Catostomidae

Bigmouth Buffalo

Ictiobus cyprinellus (Valenciennes), the bigmouth buffalo, was first reported by Copes and Tubb (1966) and Tubb et al. (1965) from the lower reaches of the Pembina, Forest, Maple, Sheyenne, and Wild Rice Rivers of North Dakota (Figure A12). The species has been most common in the Red, Bois de Sioux, Rabbit, and Otter Tail Rivers in the southern portion of the basin. The bigmouth buffalo has been reported at 12% of stream sites sampled in the RRV ecoregion since 1962 (Table 4).
