Smelt Family


Smelt Family

A marine family that contains 10 species of small fishes. Some live in estuaries and others are anadromous, entering rivers and streams to spawn.


Rainbow Smelt

Smelt are slender, silvery fish with a large mouth and well developed teeth and adipose fin. First stocked in Lake Sakakawea in 1971, smelt have multiplied and spread throughout the Missouri River and its reservoirs.
