South Dakota Breeding Bird Atlas

The South Dakota Ornithologists' Union -- 1995

The completion of fieldwork and the publishing of the South Dakota Breeding Bird Atlas were made possible because of the combined efforts of many organizations and individuals. This project was the first systematic statewide effort to attempt to document the distribution of all breeding birds. The fieldwork took the volunteer observers into many areas of the state not previously well searched for birds. Gaining access to these areas would not have been possible without the cooperation of many farmers, ranchers, and other landowners. Many of them not only allowed atlasers on their properties, but also contributed information about nest locations. Besides the landowners, there are no doubt many others whose names were not recorded, but who made some contribution to the success of this project, their help is appreciated and acknowledged along with those listed below.

Sponsoring Organizations: The South Dakota Ornithologists' Union and the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks.

A THANK YOU is extended to all of the Presidents of SDOU during the atlas project: Jocelyn L. Baker, Rex Riis, Ken Graupmann, Dennis R. Skadsen and J. David Williams. The continuity of their support contributed to the completion of the project.

A THANK YOU is extended to George Vandel and Eileen Dowd Stukel of the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks for their constant support, and to the Parks Division for issuance of free state park entry permits for some out of state atlasers. The department's donation of county maps and field data sheets helped get the project started and the funding of a major portion of the printing costs of the atlas contributed to its successful conclusion.

Financial Support Was Received from: The South Dakota Wildlife Federation, The Missouri Breaks Audubon Society, Jocelyn L. Baker, Harry Behrens, Willis Hall, Nelda J. Holden, Mr and Mrs. Clyde E. Johnson, James J. Norton, Marge Parker, Steve Van Sickle, and Juli Wilcox.

Funds were also received from the Nongame Migratory Bird Program and the North American Waterfowl Management Plan of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. These funds were for costs related to the inventory of the National Wildlife Refuges and 50 selected Waterfowl Production Areas in South Dakota during the atlas project.

The SDBBA Committee: Dr. Robert Buckman, Ken Graupmann, Michael Melius, Richard A. Peterson, Steve Van Sickle, Eileen Dowd Stukel, and Dr. Nathaniel R. Whitney. (It was a long project - committee members came and went, but those listed above participated in several meetings.)

Project Coordinator: Richard A. Peterson.

Data Entry: Dr. Robert Buckman, Dakota State University, with the assistance of David Zolnowsky who develped the d-Base computer program for the data entry.

A special THANK YOU is also extended to Juanita L. Peterson for the delineation of all the atlas blocks and areas on sets of county maps.

The Volunteer Observers:

Without atlasers there would not have been an atlas project. Thanks to all who contributed their time. And special thanks to the small group of dedicated atlasers who each contributed more than 400 observations, they are denoted below with an (*) asterisk.
