Breeding Birds of the Platte River Valley

Cassin's Kingbird -- (Tyrannus vociferans)

Nebraska Status: A rare to uncommon migrant and summer resident in the western Panhandle. Extreme occurrence dates in Nebraska extend from 27 April to 28 September (Johnsgard 1980).

Platte River Status: A rare and local migrant and summer resident at the extreme western edge of the study area. Huntley (1953) found one Cassin's kingbird near Brule, Keith County on 8 May 1953.

Breeding Range: Our records from the study area are restricted to the Western Plain and Sandhills physiographic regions.

Breeding Population: We were unable to obtain population data for this species because of the extremely small number of birds, and their spotty distribution on the study area.

Habitat: Within our study area, Cassin's kingbird was found associated only with extensive tracts of dry native grasslands.

Effect of Habitat Alteration: Because of the small population in the study area we do not believe that the current level of habitat alteration has produced any positive or negative effects on this species.

Nesting Data: Adult Cassin's kingbirds were found in Garden County on June 1979 and in Deuel County in June 1980. Their presence in suitable habitat at the proper season suggests that these birds may have nested on the study area. Johnsgard (1979) reported that most egg dates from Oklahoma are in June.
