Platte River Status: A fairly common migrant and uncommon nesting species. Occurrence dates from the Mormon Island Crane Meadows, Hall County, extend from 25 April to 17 August. Tout (1947) considered this swallow uncommon in Lincoln County during 4 May to 17 July. Rosche (1979) found this species in the lower North Platte River Valley during 12 April to 20 August.
Breeding Range: An uncommon nesting species in the Platte River Valley west to Lake McConaughy. Locally distributed on the Eastern Plain, Dissected Plain and Sandhills; casual on the Western Plain.
Breeding Population: The population in 1979-1980 was estimated at 2,000 nesting pairs. Based on our geographic distribution data within the study area, we believe that the population is significantly underestimated.
Habitat: We found a mean density of 1.5 pairs per km2 in lowland forest. Nests are usually excavated in banks of clay, sand, or gravel along the river channel. Faanes and Andrew (1983) found this swallow in the area of exposed bluff faces along a river study area in northeastern North Dakota.
Effect of Habitat Alteration: We believe the extensive alteration of native habitats in the study area has produced no impact on this species.
Nesting Data: We have eight confirmed records of nests from the study area during 3 May to 1 July. Lingle observed birds excavating nest holes on 13 May 1980, and on 6 May 1981 at the Mormon Island Crane Meadows, Hall County. Benckeser (1948) reported a pair of northern rough-winged swallows nesting at Brule, Keith County, during July 1947. Kansas egg dates extend from 11 May to 30 June (Johnsgard 1979).
