Nebraska Status: An uncommon migrant and locally common winter resident, present statewide during 16 September to 12 May. Formerly a regular nesting species in Nebraska, especially along the Missouri River (Johnsgard 1980).

Platte River Status: A common migrant and locally common winter resident; extirpated as a nesting species. Occurrence dates at the Mormon Island Crane Meadows, Hall County, extend from 21 October to 13 April.

Breeding Range: There is one nest record from the Platte River Valley in Garden County.

Breeding Population: Bald eagle has been extirpated as a nesting species in our study area.

Habitat: Within its normal range, bald eagle typically nests in extensive wooded areas adjacent to rivers or lakes.

Effect of Habitat Alteration: The encroachment of wooded vegetation within the Platte River watershed has benefited this species through providing an abundance of roost and perch sites along and adjacent to the river.

Nesting Data: There is one nest record for the study area. On 25 May 1834, Townsend (1839) discovered a nest in a red cedar tree along the North Platte River near Ash Hollow, Garden County. Egg dates in North Dakota range from 29 April to 14 May (Stewart 1975).
