In 1987 seeded dense nesting cover (DNC) plots (n = 4) and native prairie/shrub
plots (n = 2) were enclosed with predator proof electric fences to evaluate
duck use and enhance duck production. The plots are 40 acres in size and are located
on private land under 10-year easements. The DNC vegetation is an introduced cool-season
mixture composed of tall wheat grass (Aqropyron elongatum), intermediate
wheatgrass (A. intermedium), alfalfa (Medicago sativa) and sweet
clover (Melilotus spp.). The native prairie/shrub plots are located on
idled land. The fences around the DNC plots were trenched and buried but those
around the native plots had to be skirted because of the stoniness of the land.
Fence design is detailed and preliminary results of duck use are outlined.
