Breeding Population Inventories and Measures of Recruitment
V. Examples
Throughout this chapter we have cited many examples of
various methods of estimating breeding populations and
recruitment rate. The development of survey and estimation
procedures in North America is of special interest because
of the longevity of study areas used in Canada and the
development of the cooperative breeding ground surveys,
which employ both aerial transects and ground study
areas. In addition, many of the methods used in these
surveys have influenced surveys elsewhere in North
America and abroad. We will review
them in detail here, report on their current status, and
illustrate how data derived from these surveys are used.
